CROSS ANGELS
The artwork embraces the theme of the spirit world intersecting with the world of matter. There are whisperings from angels and other- worldly beings in these mixed media works on paper. Some of the artwork takes its inspiration from our ancient ancestors, the Khoi San, who have left their mysterious and fading traces in the rock art of Southern Africa. They, the ancestors of all humanity (it is now understood) had a vital and living relationship to the natural world of plants and animals, the seasons and the stars.
This series of work on paper attempts to remind the viewer of this sort of living relationship with the natural world, at a crisis time on earth where we are encountering unprecedented die-back in the plant and animal kingdom, the sixth great extinction, this time around caused by the heavy hand of mankind. The drawings are a prodding and reminder of another and more ancient way of being, a way of oneness with nature and an attunement to the spirit murmurings of the universe. There are about thirty images in this series. Here is a sampling. The title, Cross Angels, comes from the whimsical idea that the angels might today be quite cross with how humanity is conducting itself. The series contains about fifteen images.
